As you wander around the Dogo area you are sure to come across these marks known as “Yudama.” They symbolize the foam and bubbles that come off of the steaming hot springs. How many were you able to find so far?
Most of the shops in this shopping district were once inns and lodging houses. People would stay in the row of inns and commute to the hot springs, which served as one giant public bathhouse. Over time, the hot springs were split up into different facilities and each inn had its own to be enjoyed. With these changes, some of the inns changed their business model and became souvenir shops or restaurants.
