Of the two large stones in front of you, the flat one in the front resembles a lotus, so it was named the “Renge stone.” The vertical rock in the back is called the “Eboshi rock” because it is reminiscent of a traditional kind of tall hat.

Because the two rocks also resemble a mortar and pestle, the Eboshi rock is also called the “Man’s stone,” and the Renge stone is called the “Woman’s stone.”

One pilgrim from Fukushima Prefecture who passed through here about 200 years ago wrote in their diary that “after climbing up 48 cho, there’s the Renge stone, the Eboshi rock, and a tea shop at the peak.” After passing through the Kuki-toge Pass, you’ll be able to see the Yakiyama Kojindo temple, but there is a tea shop there as well.

Enjoy the uniquely shaped large rocks as you proceed down this historic road.
