We’ve now arrived at the Nagara Ichirizuka Milestone, which is the 63rd and final signpost of the Yakiyama-goe trailhead. Just like the Sakura-chaya Ichirizuka Milestone, Nagara Ichirizuka Milestone was also built by the Kishu clan about 300 years ago. Unlike the Sakura-chaya Ichirizuka Milestone, which has two burial mounds and is still standing, Nagara Ichirizuka Milestone is not so fortunate. Though it used to have burial mounds with both pine and mountain sakura trees, only the latter remains.

Before there were roads, the people of Mikisato would transport their sick to the hospital in Owase using stretchers. The people who traversed the mountain were strong enough to do so despite the difficulty. As such, it wasn’t seen as a special mountain, and wasn’t one that people wanted to especially go to see.

The difficulty of traversing the mountain can also be seen in a love song by Owase-Bushi that talks about flattening down Yakiyama so that a daughter of the village chief in Mikisato and a carpenter in Owase could meet.
