Akō Castle stands out with its innovative military design, showcasing features that were unique for its time. As you admire the stone walls from this vantage point, notice their intricate and complex shapes. Pay attention to the narrow gaps arranged in circles, triangles, and squares. These openings are called arrow-slits, and were strategically designed for guns and bows, allowing defenders to attack without blind spots. Imagine standing here in a siege, with no place to hide.
Building such a state-of-the-art castle came at a great cost. After its completion, the castle was overseen by the second lord, Asano Nagatomo. Unfortunately, he faced financial difficulties, leading to a reduction in his vassals. This context provides a backdrop for our next historical character, the third lord— Asano Naganori, also known as Asano Takumi no Kami from the famous tale of Chūshingura.
