Matsumaru Station is the only one in Shikoku that has a hot spring. It’s said that the less acidic pH of the water is good for the skin. Though there aren’t many trains on the Yodo Line, you have enough time to take a dip in the waters, have a drink, and then, magically, you’ll be just in time for the train. Many of the locals ride the train just for this reason.
Originally, they were going to build an aquarium here but were surprised while digging to discover hot spring water. When they set up a bathing area for locals, rumors spread about how it was good for the skin. When Matsumaru Station was renovated, they decided to make it a station hot spring for everyone to enjoy, thus giving it the name “Poppo.”
By using a wood furnace, it’s eco friendly, and the wood comes from the nearby mountain. Locals bring wood and exchange it for a special ticket that can be used as local currency. It’s said that the mountain has been kept clean as a part of this wood gathering process.
