In Japan, there’s a longstanding tradition of displaying flowers at the entrance to show hospitality. The three flowers that greet guests in the lobby are Chinese peony, tree peony, and lily. There’s a saying that describes the graceful behavior of women. “She stands like a peony, sits like a peony, and walks like a lily.” The phrase is often referenced in rakugo storytelling and other tales.
These artworks carry a hidden history from the Edo Period when luxury was prohibited and flamboyant kimonos and lifestyles were considered taboo. However, the Edo people refused to quietly conform. Those who wished to embrace fashion secretly adorned the insides of their kimonos with eye-catching patterns known as “Edo Komon.”
