Welcome to Isonokami Jingu Shrine, one of Japan's oldest and most revered spiritual sites. As you enter the peaceful grounds, you may notice a refreshing atmosphere.
The shrine was originally called "Furusha," which has an interesting story behind it.
According to legend, an honest old woman was washing her clothes by the river when she discovered a mysterious sword that had floated ashore, moving effortlessly through rocks and branches. She quickly dodged the sword and wrapped it in her cloth, bringing it to a stop.
Seeing it as a divine gift, she donated the sword to the shrine, which is how it came to be known as "Furusha," or “the cloth that stayed.”
The story continues with a greedy woman who heard about the sword and rushed to the river, hoping to find treasure of her own.
She discovered gold and silver, but by the time she returned home the next day, her treasures had turned into ordinary rocks. Many believe these rocks are represented by the rock "Eboshiiwa", still visible in the area.
Let's begin our journey while listening to more stories like these.
