The "Kamisugi" is a remarkable cedar tree that has stood for over 300 years. Known as the "Sacred Cedar of Isonokami Furu" in the Manyoshu, it represents a time when many cedars grew in the area, believed to be a home for the gods. Standing beside this tree, you can appreciate the prayers people offered long ago.
Isonokami Jingu Shrine has an interesting history. It served as the home of the Mononobe clan, responsible for military affairs, and functioned as an arsenal for the Yamato government. According to legend, an ancestor of the Mononobe clan descended from the heavens, bringing with him the Ten Sacred Treasures bestowed by the gods. These treasures were believed to possess the power to revive the dead when used in conjunction with the chant "Hi-fu-mi-yo-i-mu-na-ya-ko-to, furube yura yura."
The god of the sword enshrined at Isonokami Jingu Shrine symbolizes more than military strength; it’s also a place for prayers about rebirth and renewal, the awakening of both mind and body.
