Did you feel a change when you arrived here?
Did you feel the wind’s clear caress upon your skin?
The scent of trees wafting from deep within the green?
The sound of cicadas melting into the quiet mountains?
Before you know it, these sensations spark a flame deep in your heart.
A furtive, silent fire that burns not for another, but for yourself.
A fire that wills you to rise and live your life once more.
Welcome to the Fontaine Bleau Sengokutei in Hakone.
Here, in the embrace of Hakone’s outer crater, you are safe. Here, you can leave the world behind. The noisiness of daily life will not reach you here; only the breeze and birdsong amidst the swaying grasses and vapor.
Once you drop your luggage and take a rest, make the bath your first stop, and surrender yourself to the hot water.
With a pH value of 2.0, our hot spring water is richly acidic. Gushing from the Ōwakudani area, these waters carry a scent of sulphur that will loosen keratin, almost as if you were shedding a layer of skin.
A “detox bath” in every sense of the word, leaving you soft and supple as it melts away the rest.
You’ll be stunned by how well it retains heat;
just like a lantern, it will make you glow gently from the inside.
These hotsprings are for more than just warming oneself;
They give you time and space to relax and release all your senses.
Tune your ears to the birds’ song
as vapor caresses your shoulders and the wind kisses your cheeks, under clouds that exist only for this moment.
Let the hot water gently show you
the priceless nature of this fact:
“You are here.”
Here where it’s high and humid,
the seasons come and go in a picturesque display.
Nature cradles this place, far away from civilization.
Azaleas herald spring, followed by the viridescence of summer. It gives way to blazing yellow leaves in autumn, until the winter snows enfold it all.
And here you will also find the birthplace of Japan’s first auberge-style inn.
In this stillness – this altitude, this blank canvas – the exotic fire that is French cuisine has left its mark.
Wrap yourself in a robe upon leaving the bath, and step outside to feel the air.
As nature’s breath cools your warm body, you will swear you feel the breeze in your heart as well.
Nature does not impose its solace.
It simply is; it merely shows us our contours as it softens them.
Your anxieties, your work – they all seem far away at the touch of the wind.
And then the thought hits you, bringing a gentle expectation from deep within:
“What’s cooking today?”
In this moment, your heart takes a quiet step forward. Quiet, but nevertheless, a prologue to the story of how you found yourself again.
Dinner at Sengokutei is far more than a typical full course.
It is French cuisine, crafted by and for Japan.
Innovative yet nostalgic, made with humble ingredients that nevertheless speak firmly for themselves.
French cuisine meets Japanese hospitality.
“Omotenashi.” “Omotte, nasu.” “To accomplish, with care.” A philosophy that elevates cuisine from mere food into a dialogue.
To deepen this gastronomical dialogue, we encourage you to step into the bath once more, thirty minutes before dinner.
Relaxing in the hot spring allows buoyancy to act on your digestive system, awakening your appetite. Sweating will also intensify salt and umami flavors.
Think of it as your pre-dinner warm-up.
Then, take a look in the mirror.
Notice how your reflection seems a bit different.
This is your sign.
The sign that you’re ready for a delectable rendezvous.
Come as you are - no need for fancy finery.
Dinner at Sengokutei is not a time for ornamenting, but rather unwinding.
We aim for the familiarity of home - where you may relax and enjoy a delicious meal.
To eat is to live.
And to live is to accept yourself
in this moment
exactly as you are.
We hope you enjoy your dinner,
that this time helps you relax from the core of your being.
