This delivery room was used during the birth of the eldest daughter between Naosuke and Shizu, his concubine.
At the time, there was a chain loop hanging from the ceiling, which the laboring mother would hold onto while giving birth. In order to help the mother maintain her strength during delivery, she would be seated with layers of futon mattress supporting her back.
Yachiyo, the eldest daughter between Naosuke and his concubine Shizu, was born shortly before he left for Edo as the heir to Hikone Domain. Even while he was in Edo, Naosuke was concerned with his daughter, and he frequently wrote Shizu about her. Yachiyo would go on to become the wife of the lord of Takamatsu Domain, Matsudaira Yoritoshi.
The small shrine before the delivery room is dedicated to a god of safe delivery, and it is said that Naosuke prayed to it every day to wish for Shizu to have a safe delivery.
