In a world overflowing with materialistic things, just how much value is there to be found in creating “something new”? This thought may have crossed the mind of anyone who does a creative job at least once.

The artist of this piece, product designer Ryuichi Kozeki, is constantly battling with this question.

The idea for “Oculus” came from a wallwasher that Kozeki came across at work. This light used the surrounding walls to reflect light around the room and is a concept often seen in architecture and interior design, but Kozeki sought to create one product that could apply this same concept.

It took a lot of trial and error, but this product applies the same concept as the wallwasher with a delicate and beautiful gradation of light contained inside which still serves its primary function. The message it conveys is that, in order to preserve the purity of the product itself, you must make the product as simple as you possibly can.

“Whenever I am creating something, I want to create something that highlights the value of the product itself.”

That is his answer to the original question. This piece is supposed to push its viewers to rethink the concept of light and how it should be used. Maybe this piece will build the foundations for how you go on to rethink light and its purpose in our lives.
