The Mitakesan Kofun is an ancient barrow said to be built from earth from the Todoroki Fudōson grounds. Large quantities of earth were moved, causing water to burst forth, resulting in the basis for the modern-day Benten Pond. The barrow’s peak once overlooked the old city of Edo and is the highest point in the area. Even now, you can see Mount Fuji in clear weather.
Zaō Gongen, the main deity of Shugendō Buddhism, is enshrined at the top, proving that Todoroki Fudōson Temple was originally a Shugendō temple. Shugendō teaches enlightenment through rigorous training amidst nature; it’s said Kakuban helped spread Shugendō teachings from here.
Swords, mirrors, and other relics have been discovered here as well. Now, it is a Tokyo cultural property managed by the Mangan-ji Temple.
