Monya Alley is located in Monya-chō, an area famous for its Nishijin silk fabrics, and branching out north from this alleyway is a small road called Mikami Family Alley.
In modern day Kyoto, no matter where you go, there are buildings everywhere. Sometimes you can happen across an older builder that is still holding on, but it is surrounding by towering buildings and it feels like a bit of a waste. However, this alley is different. Both sides of the road are lined with traditional houses and when you look up at the sky, there are no towering buildings in sight. Like out of a painting.
At the entrance of the alley, there is a house with the characters for Mikami (三上) on it, and to this day the Mikami family still lives here. A long standing family known for its textiles, this old house is kept here to allow the family of craftsmen to continue to run their business in their home. Even now, similar to Ajiki Alley, the street is lined with small shops on both sides.
