In order to get to this point you had to have climbed a long staircase. Did you notice that there was a point where the stairs suddenly grew more steep? One of the reasons behind this was to keep attackers from the back gate from being able to see the layout of the castle before climbing the stairs. Imagine finally climbing up the stairs to look down upon your victory and instead being greeted by a surprise attack from the opposition.

The Third and Northern Compounds were the areas that Gosamaru chose to rebuild, but honestly speaking, the Third Compound was a decoy. Gosamaru’s real goal was to protect the fortress’s water source.

In the Northern Compound sits a well named “Ufuga,” and in the western compound lies a well called “Miitoga” but both are located slightly below the cliff. The army would die of dehydration if this place were taken over, so these two water sources needed to be defended. In other words, the Northern Compound exists for the Ufuga Well and the Third Compound exists to protect the Northern Compound. Nakagusuku was the first fortress to build the wells into its structure. This proves that Gosamaru’s castle building techniques were ahead of their time.
