─The notorious Amawari. Riding the coattails of his successful overthrow of the previous head of Katsuren castle, he vigilantly waited for the opportunity to take over the whole country.

Amawari is often portrayed as a villain. This is partially due to the fact that the official history of the Ryukyu Kingdom portrays him as such. However, if you look around for documents conveying the opposite side of the story, there are even some that laud and praise Amawari.

In an effort to put an end to the misgovernance and luxury of life the previous head of Katsuren Castle enjoyed, he overthrew him and became the lord of the castle. Soon after, he lowered the taxes for the common people making it easier for the farmers everyday lives. Because of this, some even call him a “savior.” Maybe this is why Shō Taikyū originally allowed Amawari to marry his daughter.

Katsuren Castle may have been able to reach its peak thanks to Amawari but he was also the culprit behind its downfall.
