Umagaeshi is a torii gate made of stone. Past this point, no matter who you were, you would have to get off your horse and climb the rest of the way by foot and anything that made loud noises was banned. Here, the people of Fuji-kō would brace themselves for the steep climb ahead before proceeding up the trail.

There is a monkey statue in front of the torii gate. According to legend, Mt. Fuji appeared overnight in 301 BCE, and this year is referred to as “kanoe-saru”. “Saru” in Japanese means monkey, which were believed to be the messengers of Mt. Fuji. Legend has it that every sixty years following Mt. Fuji’s “conception” is a lucky year which promises an increase in profits (Incidentally, the next kanoe-saru year will be 2040).
