Lava flows like a river. In a time before bridges, people would directly walk through this marsh to traverse it.
From the bridge, you should be able to see a giant crater called “Okama” in Japanese. There are various rumors surrounding this hole like: “It’s connected to the other world,” “At the bottom resides the god of Mt. Fuji,” “It’s connected all the way to Enoshima.”
When Buddhist practitioners started their religious activities on Mt.Fuji due to Matsudai’s teachings, they used the second gō of the mountain as the focal point for their practices (there was a hall found next to the current Omuro Sengen Shrine where they would practice). At one point, this swamp began to be regarded as the boundary of the world of buddhas. Due to this belief, women were banned from continuing the climb from here on out. A checkpoint was set up, and the female Fuji-kō followers were forced to go back down the mountain.
