Across the bridge is Shimazushima Island. The Omatsu Monument, the namesake of the bridge, is located there.
Shimazushima also has the Watatsumi Beach, where people have been swimming since long ago. Across from the beach is a promenade where one can see a layer of earth that has jutted out from the ocean floor. In it are traces of where marine organisms had dug out their homes as well as a variety of other trace fossils.
In the past, this area was called the “Cow Passage,” as cows would swim across the sea in search of grass. Nowadays, even the cows use the bridge to make their way here.
