Yoki Maeyokoi (1893-1987) was a renowned figure in Chiburijima.
Despite being blind, in her childhood she took up shamisen (a traditional Japanese instrument) and popularized folk songs with so-called “dossari” melodies. Among Yoki’s students is Mr. Nishitani, a man necessary for any event whom we introduce later in this guide in the section “Mr. Nishitani of Nishitani Shōten.”
Blindness never stopped Yoki from living a normal life; she was able to cook, clean, and pull weeds from her field all on her own.
