The Sanada Estate is a retreat built by the 9th feudal lord for his mother. Standing on a vast site is a palace with 53 rooms of different sizes and scales. At its center is a scenic garden intended for sitting and taking in the scenery. By doing so, one can enjoy the borrowed landscape of Noroshiyama Mountain that looms over the town of Matsushiro.
Looking out, you can see the pond in the lush green of the garden. This pond is a part of a waterway network that has remained since the Edo period, called the "Izumi Suiro" waterway. The water drawn from the upstream river flows to this point via several ponds in the gardens of other houses and continues further downstream.
“This town is made of water.” Through this story, we see the meaning behind those words.
