A Flower Doesn’t Grow Without Water

The Sanada family ruled this land for a long time, but that wasn’t the only thing they’re known for. Just like numerous droplets of water make a river, excellent vassals and other unnamed persons held up the history of this city.

The Literary and Military School is where the feudal lords learned science and martial arts. The school was originally founded by the 8th feudal lord. He was an elite, the great-grandson of Shogun Yoshimune Tokugawa, and was adopted by the Sanada Family. He was also actively recruiting talented people in Matsushiro, including Sakuma Zōzan. Zōzan is said to have had a great influence on the patriots of the school including the likes of Kaishū Katsu, Shōin Yoshida, and Ryōma Sakamoto towards the end of the Edo period. The establishment of the school was also Zōzan’s idea.

No matter how beautiful a flower may be, it doesn’t grow without water. Zōzan wanted talented people to flourish, which was the reason behind the establishment of the school.
