A failed attempt at lover’s suicide thanks to Yaji and Kita

This is the prestigious and historical inn known as The Fujiya Gohonjin, where many great lords and daimyo visited for over 400 years. Even in modern days, many celebrities have stayed here.

The Fujiya is mentioned in a comical novel called Hizakurige, which is about two popular characters named Yaji and Kita. They’re two commoners of Edo who can’t afford to stay at such an elite place like The Fujiya, so they stay at a smaller inn nearby.

While they relaxed in their room, Kita heard some commotion from the neighboring room and decided to peek in through the connecting door. A young man and woman were talking secretly about something, but he couldn’t figure out what. After listening for a few minutes he gathered a few facts about their situation. She was the daughter of the innkeeper and he was a poor man who fled because of debt he couldn’t pay back. Somehow fate brought them together and they fell in love, but since they could never be together they vowed to commit suicide together.

They left their room and Kita decided it would be fun to follow them and see what happened next. He followed them to the garden, but somehow he lost track of the couple on the way. He heard footsteps approaching and quickly climbed into a nearby tree to stay out of sight. The couple appeared, exchanging their final words of affection before committing suicide together, right there under the same tree Kita was hiding in. The man wielded his sword to finish the deed, but in doing so he grazed Kita’s foot with the tip of his sword.

Kita fell from the tree and surprised the couple, who screamed out in shock. This drew the attention of other people staying at the inn, and thus ended the failed attempt at double suicide. The woman’s father heard about this story and granted Yaji and Kita special treatment at the inn, forever grateful for saving his daughter’s life, however unintentionally.
