A monk once said, “Suishoni shuto nareba, rissho mina shinnari.” These words mean “Never forget you’re the protagonist. No matter the situation, never lose sight of yourself.” It does not mean to act selfishly or be arrogant; the message is to always think for yourself, in your own way, no matter where you go. Calligraphy works the same way. The artist says that poetry is born when you wield your own autonomy every day, and perhaps the same can be said of the art of travel.
