The Story of Takehara, the Town that Lived Alongside Salt

Tour Start

The Story of Takehara, the Town that Lived Alongside Salt

This guide begins at Sumiyoshi bridge, however, if you have the extra time, we encourage you to begin your journey at the former Morikawa family residence. At the Morikawa residence, you can learn about the workings of how salt used to be made in Takehara, and experience what things were like at the time.

As you walk past the old-world buildings in this town, you’ll hear the story of how salt helped Takehara prosper, which helped various areas such as sake production, shipping, and academics to blossom.

Within the townscape, there are many meticulously crafted details and memories hidden in places you might miss on a casual stroll. These special areas are marked with a star symbol (★) in the guide.

We encourage you to travel the same paths more than once so you can take a second to soak in the sounds of Takehara.
