At the base of Haga-ji lies the longstanding port city of Nishizu. The center of the Wakasa area started in Onyu before moving to Nishizu and finally settling in the Obama area. The Nishizu area is now known for its Wakasa-style lacquered chopsticks.
At Wakasa-hime Shrine, you can find a boat-shaped guardian deity for ships. This was offered by a proprietor of a cargo ship who was praying for safety at sea. This proprietor's name was Furukawa and he was based in the city of Nishizu. Furukawa also created a garden in order to act as the reception hall for the domain lord. This is Goshoen, which still exists in Nishizu. Here you can find another guardian deity of a ship similar to the one at Wakasa-hime shrine. You might be able to make a new discovery by comparing the two. Many of the guardian deities' are made by the same carpenters who made the cargo ships and are essentially miniatures of these larger and more elaborate crafts. You can imagine just how grand the larger ships were by examining these two replicas. There are a total of seven of these replicas in Wakasa, including one in Hachiman Shrine in Obama Nishigumi.
