Legend has it that a rope has been hung on this rock for over 1,200 years. It’s said that the lord of Japan encountered a gust of wind on his way to an expedition and used the rope to tie his ship to the rock. They landed and built a shrine at Mitsuiwa, prayed for safety at sea and victory in their wars, and returned to their expedition. Please take this opportunity to pray for safe travels and then take a picture. During the day a deep blue ocean surrounds the torii gate standing on top of the rock, and at dusk you might catch the moment the sun is floating just behind the gate as it sets into the distance.
