The bay in this area is the southernmost part of the expansive Iseshima coastal inlet, which is located along the Kumano-nada Sea. To the north side of Matsumoto-toge Pass is the coastal inlet, and to the south runs Shichirimihama Beach. You can take in these contrasting views from the gazebo, about 30 minutes in from the trailhead.
In the neighboring towns, there were inns called Zenkon-yado that offered free lodging and food for poorer pilgrims in the Edo Period.
The stones paved near the trailhead are a mix of Edo-style and Kamakura-style. You can tell the difference by how they are laid out.
You can borrow walking sticks by the trailhead and return them when you exit the path. Once you climb up for a while, you’ll reach the cobblestone path built during the Edo Period.
