There was a large population of stonemasons who lived in the neighboring villages. In the Edo Period, records show they were paid 1.5 kg of rice a day for their labor. From here, we will set foot on a beautiful cobblestone path that was crafted with the sweat and tears of those stonemasons.
The Choshi-gawa River flows through the area, and in the past when there were no bridges, people had no choice but to walk around it or use a ferryboat to cross. For those who wanted to travel to the Kumano Sanzan, the Three Grand Shrines of Kumano, it was a challenge even to arrive at this point.
From this parking lot to Owase Station, it takes about 2.5 hours to walk along the Magose-toge Pass Route, which is about 4.4 kilometers. Once you make it over the crossing, there is a bus at Owase Station that takes you back to this point.
