Ichirizuka milestones show the distance traveled along a trail. While they are only on one side of the path now, originally you could see mounds of earth planted with pine trees and hackberry trees that served as markers on both sides of Magose-toge Pass. They are hard to make out now, so you have to look very closely to see them.
It is said that the Owase milestones were built over 300 years ago by the Kishu Domain, but these Ichirizuka milestones were also built around the same time. If we calculate the distance in modern measurements, the milestones are spaced around four kilometers apart.
These Ichirizuka milestones served as guides for travelers to their destination, but they were also used to calculate the cost of a palanquin ride.
The milestones of the Tokaido Highway begin at Nihombashi, but these Ichirizuka milestones were created by the Kishu Domain and thus originate from Wakayama Castle. The path that continues off Magose-toge Pass has two kinds of milestones, one of which has been preserved in its original form on both sides of the road.
