Susano-o-no-Mikoto is worshiped here at Owase-jinja Shrine, where the “Owase Ya-Ya Festival” has been held regularly since the Edo Period. This name originates in the phrase samurai would use to introduce themselves in battle: “Yah,Yah, My name is …”
There are also two large sacred camphor trees on the ground said to be over one thousand years old. They stand side by side like a married couple, and the circumference of the tree that stands by the river is 10 meters, while the one by the main hall measures 9 meters.
Kongo-ji Temple, located next to Owase-jinja Shrine, is one of five temples that are said to represent Kumano. An extravagant temple gate holds statues of the Deva Kings, a rare sight in the local area. Since it is such an important temple, we suggest praying at both the shrine and the temple.
