There’s a pleasant sound in the background.
What could it be?

That’s the sound of bamboo splitting.
Here you can try the nationally designated traditional art of Suruga bamboo crafts.

In the peaceful war-free times of the early Edo Period, people cherished carefree activities like listening to bird songs or insect sounds. It was in Shizuoka during the same time when they invented Suruga bamboo craft, a technique for building small cages using rounded bamboo strips. This technique allowed them to avoid hurting the precious insects and birds kept at that time.

The renowned shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu was an insect enthusiast himself and was known to catch bell crickets and other bugs to enjoy their songs.

At this workshop, you can create beautiful pieces by using kits designed by Suruga bamboo craft artisans.

After you carefully insert the bamboo strips into the holes one by one to complete the final product, you’ll notice the smooth design finish.

We hope you can enjoy the experience of watching your piece change and age over time as you take care of it.
