The “Sharigami” Paper is a lucky item at Hogon-ji Temple based on the concept of “an idea to throw away.” This custom pays reverence to the monk Ippen. The idea behind this practice is that by writing down your thoughts of greed, jealousy and other worldly attachments, and then throwing them away, you will be able to reflect on yourself in a new way and go back to your origins. There is also a “self-righting” tumbler doll called “Mou Ippen,” a play on Japanese words that means one more time.
