It’s said that when it rains in Owase, it rains from below too, and it’s why there’s such a long, beautiful cobblestone road. The stones, which come from local sources, are piled high so that the path doesn’t overflow in times of severe rain. Local villagers and stonemasons break rocks from nearby mountain rivers and use them for the road.

Past the information board for the cobblestone, there are heart-shaped rocks called Gotton stones. You might be wondering where this name comes from. Don’t they look like they’re floating just a little bit? If you put your foot on one of them, the resulting noise sounds like “gotton.” There are even some wooden plaques where people have written that they came here just to see the stones. Try looking for some if you have the chance.
