After the Asano retainers surrendered, the Nagai family took control, followed by the Mori family, who ruled until the end of the Edo Period. The power of the Mori family was significantly weaker than that of the Asano family. Some believe that if the Asano family had remained in power, the Shinkansen might have reached Akō Station. However, under the Mori family, the status of the castle declined as the amount of vacant land and rice fields increased.
Because of the lack of major developments, the original castle grounds have been remarkably preserved, maintaining their status as one of Japan’s rare castle ruins. Interestingly, despite changing times, salt production continues to thrive here in Akō. From the castle tower base, you can spot a salt factory chimney that to this day contributes about 20% of Japan’s salt production.
Now, as you gaze out over Akō, think about the motivations behind Asano’s attack on Kira. Different theories exist: some suggest Kira stole salt-making techniques from Asano, while others believe Kira was upset because Asano refused to share their techniques. What do you think happened?
