Centuries passed. The times changed, and this theater was built on this day during the Showa Period. The Otomeza Theater, or “Virgin Theater,” was built by the mayor at the time and named for his mother, who was called “O-Tome-san.” This plot of land was originally used as a shipyard, but eventually it came to be used for performances by traveling performers and festivals held by the locals. It’s said the mayor bought the land out of his own pocket to build the theater.

It was also used as a movie theater later, seating 232 people. It reportedly became so busy that the film technician could not adequately go to the restroom, relieving himself in bottles instead. The theater thrived with showings all day until late into the night. However, it too was swept away with the changing times. Over time, it became a place for sorting oranges until it was abandoned. Then, during the Heisei Period, it was restored.

Speaking of films, Mitarai’s antique townscape and the landscapes of the Seto Inland Sea have served as locations for many anime and television dramas. A Western-style building used for TV commercials is also still standing, so be sure to stop by.
