The Myth of Tenson Kōrin

Long ago, Amaterasu Omikami, the sun goddess, instructed her grandson, Ninigi no Mikoto, to rule the earthly world. In response, Ninigi no Mikoto descended to Earth with the three sacred treasures and ears of rice, accompanied by other gods.

The story of the god’s grandson descending to Earth is known as “Tenson Kōrin” and is rooted in the Kirishima region. This myth recounts the founding of Japan, with Ninigi no Mikoto, recognized as the first god to set foot on Earth. Both Ninigi no Mikoto and his descendants are honored at Kirishima Shrine.

Kirishima is home to more than 20 volcanoes, both large and small. The landscape features islands shrouded in mist, rugged mountain ranges, vast crater lakes, and columns of rising smoke. This stunning scenery captivates viewers, leading many to believe, “This must be where the gods live.”

What did Ninigi no Mikoto feel when witnessing the beauty of Kirishima? Let’s imagine as we continue our journey.
