Take a moment to compare the forests on either side. Notice the differences in tree types and leaf colors?

Mount Takao is unique in Japan, featuring a mix of evergreen and deciduous broadleaf trees. The vegetation varies between the north and south based on the average annual temperature of about 13 degrees Celsius. This natural variety is part of the mountain's appeal.

Also, look down at your feet. You may see nibbled nuts or small droppings.

These are signs of flying squirrels, which inhabit Mount Takao and are rare in Tokyo. At night, they glide to and from large trees.

Listen for their mysterious call. Some people liken their sound to that of a tengu.

As night falls, these flying squirrels, along with foxes and badgers, become active. Monks at Yakuoin Temple note that at night, when fewer people are around, the presence of wild animals reminds them of the divine.

Now, the path ahead divides into "Otokozaka" (Men's Hill) and "Onnazaka" (Women's Hill). Otokozaka features 108 steep stone steps, while Onnazaka ascends gently. No matter which path you choose, both will lead you back to the same trail.

Both routes present challenges, so pay attention to your breath as you go. Exhale any tension from the stress of daily life, and take a deep breath of the fresh air of Mount Takao. Allow the mountain to absorb your burdens.

When you reach the top, you’ll be ready for a moment of reflection.
