There’s a certain legend of Lake Kamo.
There once was a town chief of Kamo Village named Buemon. He was known for being greedy to the point that he’d say that he wanted to fill in the lake and become the richest man in Sado.
One night, he was returning to the village and he met a young woman. Her visage in the moonlight showed a beauty that was almost not human. He immediately felt charmed by her and left his companions to walk with her by themselves. The villagers followed them from afar out of worry.
Suddenly, the woman turned around with a chilling smile, grabbed Buemon by the hand and began walking to the lake. Buemon was unsteady on his feet as if he was drunk and was easily pulled forward closer and closer to the water.
The villagers ran back to their homes in fear and that night, there was panic in the village. The next morning, they took out a boat and desperately tried to look for Buemon and they found his corpse, his porcelain toes twitching
The villagers trembled and shrieked with fear.
“This has to be the work of the Guardian of Lake Kamo!”
This is how people learned the fate of those who would try to fill in the lake or use it for their own personal gains. It’s possible that even now this cautionary tale helps to protect the lake.
