Please introduce yourself.

I’m Yukari Motoyama, an artist. My process for creation involves thinking about the composition for drawings or paintings, and also considering the interaction between the piece and the people looking at it.

What would you like people to focus on when looking at your work?

Well, I’d like them to look at what’s right in front of them, and look really closely. I’d be happy if they could see the little details and appreciate how it all came together.

How did you come up with this piece?

I think art exists everywhere and comes in so many different shapes and sizes. There’s a part of me that has a very strong interest in finding out what exactly makes something art and what form it takes. This piece was made with this in mind.

Is there anything you’d like to convey with this piece?

I think there are a lot of concepts that people think they understand until they’re faced with them in the real world. It’s only then that they see that what they imagined things to be can be different from reality. I feel like that thinking’s helped enrich my life, so I hope the people looking at this piece can feel that too. Hopefully they’ll be able to gain a different perspective as well.

Is there anything you focused on or worked especially hard on in this piece?

This exhibition room is pretty unique, and I took note of how guests aren’t allowed to get close to the pieces and how everything’s kept enclosed in glass. With that in mind, I wanted to try and focus on making my piece feel like a seamless part of the room.

What does this piece depict?

For this one, I made something that wouldn’t be classified as a traditional drawing. I was really excited by the idea of it being sealed away behind glass, so I made it with that in mind.
