Is this building just a residence?

Yoyogi Park sits on a plateau between two rivers.

Let’s step back again in time.

In the Meiji era, this area became a military training ground.

Then, in 1910, Japan’s first powered flight took place here.

Only seven years after the Wright brothers, Yoshitoshi Tokugawa, descendant of the Tokugawa family, took to the skies.

Many soldiers once trained here, and their presence helped support the growth of Shibuya.

But during the war, the city was reduced to ashes by air raids.

Afterward, this area became a U.S. military housing complex known as Washington Heights.

Then came the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. The land was returned to Japan, and the buildings were used as the Olympic Village.

One building still remains today.

Around the same time, NHK relocated here.

Through television broadcasts, Shibuya began reaching audiences across Japan.

The name “Shibuya” spread nationwide.

From the valley floor, its culture expanded outward, reaching far beyond.
