This sturdy building is a warehouse designed with traditional Japanese architecture. Though it used as storage, it is also used as a shop. What’s sold here? A stomach medicine called ichiryū-gan.
Long ago, a common souvenir from a pilgrimage to Shinshō-ji was this medicine. This medicine was so frequently sold on the omotesando that the amount sold was said to have matched the number of offerings at the temple. So here’s this story.
There was a customer who hopped into a store with a stomach ache. He probably ate something strange during his travels. When ichiryū-gan was recommended to him, he swallowed a pill and went to Shinshō-ji Temple. Before long, he entered the shop again. His stomach felt better during his visit to the temple, so he bought a bag of the medicine to take home.
Mitsuhashi Pharmacy is the creator of ichiryū-gan and has been making the medicine for over 300 years. The secret formula is only passed on to Mitsuhashi family members. You cannot find this stuff at any old pharmacy. This medicine can only be found in Narita, so how about adding it to your souvenir list?
By the way, the reason why this building is considered a warehouse is because it maintains a constant temperature and level of dryness. It is a perfect building to store the delicate ichiryū-gan medicine.
