One of Japan’s Oldest Shopping Streets

Sensoji temple is definitely an interesting spot. The prosperous working class Omotesando, which serves as both a shopping street and a place where one can make prayers or requests.

Open 365 days a year, Nakamise is one of the oldest shopping streets in all of Japan. The distance Down the street and back is around 250 meters. It is lined with roughly 90 shops, selling goods such as sweet bean snacks, confectionaries, Japanese style folding fans, umbrellas, Edo period toys, and sponge cakes filled with red bean.

Nakamise began in the Edo period. In 1685 shops were first allowed on the street. At the time there were no buildings, just a simple line up of stalls. After some time, billboards depicting beautiful women came to dominate the street in order to capture customers’ attention. The word Nakamise refers not only the shops within Kaminarimon, but also the decoration and spectacle of the street itself. Let’s now look at something other than the old shops.
