A long, narrow district surrounded by mountains, Kurī was originally a small village. Now, however, the district has come to house younger households and rivals Kōri District for having the most number of children.

Kurī also was the stage for the following story.
After Emperor Go-Daigo was banished to the Chiburijima Island, he attempted to make a pilgrimage to the neighboring island that his ancestor, Emperor Go-Toba, was associated with. However, his boat could hardly proceed from the Kurī Port, stuck right in front of the island where the Priest Mongaku had trained—a story we leave for a later section titled “The Grave of the Priest Mongaku.”

In the end, it is said that Emperor Go-Daigo had no choice but to turn back and return to Kurī.
