On the way towards the top of Mt. Akabe are ruins of the temple Niburi-bō, where Emperor Go-Daigo (1318-1339) lived. Back then, the Emperor gave Niburi-bō the new name of Ganjō-ji. Although the name, which can be parsed into the words for “wish” and “become,” makes one believe the Emperor may have been longing to return to Kyoto, it is unclear how far this is true. Thereafter, Ganjō-ji Temple was destroyed by a wildfire and it was it is thought to have moved here.
