There is an old folk song in Oki known as “Dossari Kussari” which makes mention of sacred bamboo in forests, Japanese salgo palm of Nakaro, and the Koniwa Pine of Ōe-omote.”
The Ōe District has been long known for its Ōe-omote pine trees. But in recent years, an infestation of pine weevils has resulted in mass deforestation in the area.
In Chiburi, there is a temple called Shōyō-ji Temple, a name that means to foster pine trees. The most scenic landscapes of the island are those filled with these pine trees. However, as time has passed, most of these pine trees have been lost to the pine weevils.
