Face this small shrine on a clear day and you can see the silhouette of Mt. Ōyama. Mt. Ōyama is well-known, standing at a height of 1729 meters and providing a grazing area for cows and horses since long ago. In Chiburijima, the people named this shrine “Ōyama-san” after the mountain and prayed.
Though Chiburijima Island technically belongs to Shimane Prefecture, Mt. Ōyama lies in Tottori Prefecture. Even Sakaiminato City, which is often visited by the people of Chiburijima, lies in Tottori. Having once been the independent Oki Kingdom, some in the Oki Archipelago say that it has always been difficult to identify themselves as people of Tottori.
