Located in the northeast of Chiburijima Island is Akanada, the most proximate point to the neighboring island of Nishinoshima. Hardly 700 meters away, this area makes you truly understand that the two islands were once connected in the past.
Nowadays, the islands are bridged by power lines. Without its own source of power generation, Chiburijima Island depends on Nishinoshima Island for electricity. In other words, if these lines were cut, the entire island of Chiburijima would face a blackout.
In fact, there are many instances of blackouts in the past that were caused by typhoons. Restoring power can take up to 3 days, so shopkeepers would often give away ice cream to children for free during blackouts.
Nowadays, blackouts are a rare occurrence, but the power company still dispatches workers from its headquarters in case of an approaching typhoon. Though they usually wait on standby, duty calls them all the way to Chiburijima Island during a typhoon. Perhaps this road, which stretches from the steel tower and suddenly breaks off, was prepared for these workers to maintain the power lines.
