Kaboso is how they say “otter” in the Shōdoshima dialect. On this island, mysterious people or people whose thoughts are hard to read are referred to as “Kaboso-like people.”

The fox, which is so famous for deceiving people in mainland Japan, cannot be seen in this area, so the Kaboso takes on that role. A Kaboso can take on the shape of a human and also mimic their voice.

You think you hear the voice of someone you know calling you from outside your home, but when you go outside, no one is there. If this happens to you, it was actually the Kaboso who did it.

Though, it actually has quite the cowardly appearance and you often don’t actually see it. It’s quite shy, after all.
