In the Edo Period, there were as many as 86 oshi homes in Kamiyoshida.
One of their distinguishing features was the long, narrow path that connected the house to the main street, called “Tatsumichi”. Guests had to walk down this path to get to the home, and on the way they would cross a small river, which served as a place for them to cleanse themselves before going inside.
The homes were quite spacious, with living rooms, bedrooms, and, at the back of the house, a shrine. The oshi would conduct ceremonies there before their guests would climb the mountain. Are you curious about how well they took care of their guests?
Take a look at the inside of “The Former Togawa Home”, and hear their story.
