A long time ago, this area was overwhelmed by floods, when the snows of Mt. Fuji melted and the rivers overflowed. The rushing waters caused an avalanche of earth and rocks that nearly destroyed the town of Old Yoshida, forcing the people to move. In the end, they founded the town of Kamiyoshida in 1572.
In truth, the area up the road is called “Nakajuku”, and down the road is called “Shimojuku”,and in 1572 this area was known as Kamiyoshida. But there was nothing at the bottom of the road at the time, so you could say this street marked the border of the town at its founding.
